Chapter Thirteen

We told the limo driver we'd take a cab home and walked into Simi's past the usual gang of photographers. For once, I barely noticed them, as my mind was on the Isles family, especially Conrad, the charming wheelchair-bound patriarch.

Simi's is the current must-be-seen-in Brooklyn eatery, even though it was small and unpretentious, and the food was amazingly good. Not fancy. Not trendy. The chefs didn't foam or freeze anything or present artistically arranged tiny portions at immense prices. If I had a restaurant, it would be a place like this.

"Meatball sandwich," I told the waiter as soon as we were seated at a booth. The booth was small and my scarlet skirts took up most of my side of the table.

"Same for me," Devan ordered. "With fries."

I released the wisps from the beaded bag and they draped around my shoulder as a shawl. I looked around after the waiter left. Most of the tables and booths and seats by the bar were full but the place didn't feel over-crowded, and it wasn't noisy. The lighting was low, but not too dark. Most of the light came from over the bar, highlighting rows of amber bottles of scotch on copper shelves. I don't drink, but I think whiskey is a beautiful color. So is brandy, and wine comes in such beautiful bottles. Pretty poison.

Devan leaned across the narrow booth table. We looked deeply into each other's eyes. Very romantic if anyone was watching.

"What do you think?" he whispered. "Ghosts lurking back at their house?"

"Not a one," I answered. "We would have felt the connection."

He sighed. "Yeah. That's almost too bad."

"You thinking Alzheimer's?"

Devan nodded. "He's always been so strong for his family and friends. There was such a feeling of vulnerability around the Isles tonight."

He was so sad. I was sad. I noticed that we were holding hands across the table as our food arrived. I quickly snatched mine back. He sat up straight, and we ate our meal in silence.

Another great thing about Simi's is that it, and all the old buildings around it, used to be speakeasies during Prohibition. A lot of the buildings are condemned and half-falling down. Most are scheduled for renovation as the neighborhood is becoming ever more trendy. But for now the buildings are interconnected; there are basements leading into other basements and tunnels that cross streets to other old buildings. The whole area is a paparazzi's nightmare. Your celebrity prey enters through the front door, but you don't know where they're going to come out. A lot of customers leave the way they came in, but at Simi's you have the choice. Now, Devan and I could have made sure we were out of sight and phased off our separate ways, but we didn't do that. We walked out of one of the secret exits, coming out on a corner under a streetlight. There wasn't much traffic going by on the street. I watched the streetlight on the cross streets change a couple of times without more than a car or two going through.
